The first day is something of a tribute to the original Riding The Giants as the route closely follows followed by that intrepid band in 2012.
Departing from the top of Alpe d’Huez, riders will descend the western side of the Alpe to the town of Oz en route to the first two Cols of the trip – Col du Glandon and Col de la Croix de Fer. From there, the route descends to the town of Saint-Jean de Maurienne then heads up the valley to Saint-Michel de Maurienne and the ascent of Col du Telegraphe. From the summit, riders can enjoy the view as they descend to the ski town of Valloire and the first rest stop.
With luck, this time the weather will be much kinder than the constant drizzle experienced in 2012 and Viva will manage to avoid cycling headfirst into a muddy bank at 40 km/h.
